The Mitakon F0.95 ii Lens for Fuji X Mount. (It’s stunning)

Full Disclosure. I’ve now sold this lens and opted for the Fuji 33mm 1.4 which given that it’s weather-resistant, has autofocus, and is just really really good means there was no room for this lens in my bag as well, even though it is a really special bit of glass.

INTRO

The Mitakon 35mm F0.95 lens is one of those odd little rarities in photography gear, with a seemingly fantastical wide-open aperture this lens caught my eye a long while back (when it was will the first version) but I never pulled the trigger on buying it.

Until now. (And I’m damn glad I did)

I ordered mine from Hong Kong through Digital Rev, it took 4 days to arrive in the UK with no customs charges, I think they re-route stuff through Germany to avoid this, either way the shipping was crazy fast and the lens was a decent price and more importantly IN STOCK, which was hard to find in the UK.

I’ll also mention that I got this lens during the UK lockdown as a result of COVID-19 as such I had a decent amount of time to get out with the lens and give it a good run. I’ll do a secondary post in a year or two once I’ve used it for actual work, which at the time of writing this (June 2020) seems an age away.

Build quality

This is a solid little lens. All metal build and it feels really nice in the hands and when mounted onto a Fuji X-H1.

The focus ring is nice and smooth, without being loose, the clickless aperture can be annoying at time, but makes it interesting for video work.

Optical quality

So if you’re buying this lens then you’re getting it because it’s an F0.95, if you’re planning on shooting at anything else then really there’s not much point in looking at this as there are much better alternatives that come with autofocus.

At 0.95 it is a sharp lens (not super sharp) with a razor-thin depth of field.

SUMMARY

This is a great lens if you want a crazy depth of field on a budget! I’ve sold it now and am rocking the Fuji 33mm instead, I just need that autofocus for weddings!

I hope this has been useful, please leave a comment below if that’s the case!

Cheers,
